This project introduces a new two-story DADU at the rear of an existing single-family home, creating additional living space while preserving the existing deck as the primary connection between the two buildings. Rather than replacing this outdoor space, we incorporated it into the design, allowing direct access to the DADU from both the main house and the backyard.

The lower level is entered through a screen porch and is dedicated to a music studio. At the client's request, no interior stair connects the two floors, making the studio and the upper living area function independently. Access to the second floor is provided through the existing deck and an exterior stair from the backyard.

Despite its compact footprint, the upper level accommodates a complete living program, including a bedroom, closet, bathroom, kitchen, laundry, storage, and a comfortable living room. We extended the second floor above the screened porch to create a bright living space overlooking the backyard, where large areas of glazing bring in natural light and strengthen the connection to the landscape. A gable dormer was introduced above the bathroom to provide the additional headroom required while adding depth and character to the roof.

Our design approach focused on creating a DADU that complements the existing home without competing with it. While the scale, proportions, and roof form respond to the original house, the use of siding and board-and-batten cladding gives the new structure its own identity, resulting in a contemporary addition that remains compatible with the home's architectural character.
