This project focuses on the comprehensive redesign of an existing residence, where we aim to transform the interior layout into a more open, functional, and connected living environment while introducing a DADU that responds directly to the site’s steep topography. Our intervention is guided by the goal of improving spatial relationships, enhancing daily usability, and strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor living areas.

Within the main house, we reconfigured the existing layout to create a more fluid relationship between the kitchen, dining, and living spaces, supporting a more interactive and social way of living. We redefined key interior areas through spatial adjustments that improve circulation and overall functionality, while introducing new openings to strengthen the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding exterior environment.

The DADU was designed as a site-responsive addition shaped by the natural slope of the property. We used retaining walls to embed the structure into the terrain, clearly separating the garage level from the upper living spaces. Despite this vertical separation, the upper level maintains a strong relationship with the outdoor context, including direct access from the higher grade and visual continuity toward the future pool area.

Overall, this project reflects our approach to reimagining an existing residential structure through strategic spatial reorganization and a site-driven addition, creating a more functional, connected, and contextually integrated living environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the goal of this project?

The main goal of this project was to remodel the existing residence into a brighter and more functional living environment while introducing a DADU that responds to the site’s steep topography.

How did you approach the design process?

The design process began with analyzing the existing house and user needs. Interior spaces were reconfigured to improve circulation and enhance daily functionality, while key living areas were redefined and better connected to each other. New openings were introduced to strengthen the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.
For the DADU, the steep site condition was the main driver of the design. Retaining walls were used to integrate the building into the slope, clearly separating the garage and upper living level while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoor environment.

What challenges did you face?

The main challenge of the project was reconfiguring the spaces within the constraints of the existing structure without making major structural interventions. On the DADU side, the steep topography presented a significant challenge; the building was integrated into the site using retaining walls while maintaining functional access between the garage and living areas.
