This project focuses on redesigning the existing front entry porch to create a more cohesive relationship with the main house in terms of both scale and material expression. Our design approach is based on preserving the essential character of the existing porch while re-establishing a stronger architectural dialogue with the overall building.
We retained the existing shed roof form finished with asphalt shingles; however, we revised the material selection to better align the porch with the brick façade of the main house, introducing a metal cladding that creates a more consistent material continuity with the existing architecture.
One of the key interventions was the reconfiguration of the roof height. In its original condition, the roof extended up to the sill level of the upper windows, visually interrupting the façade and creating an overly dominant scale. To resolve this, we lowered the roof height while maintaining sufficient interior clearance within the porch space, and we recalibrated the roof pitch accordingly. This adjustment resulted in a more balanced proportion that preserves functional comfort while improving the relationship with the façade.
We also reinterpreted the existing heavy, round timber columns to establish a more contemporary structural expression. We replaced them with a paired configuration of slender square posts, creating a lighter, more rhythmic, and modern structural language. This change simplifies the perception of the entry and reinforces a more refined architectural character.
Overall, the project aims not to erase the existing condition, but to recalibrate it through proportion, materiality, and structural clarity, redefining the porch as a more integrated extension of the main house.
