Puryear, Tennessee, is a small, quiet city located in Henry County, originally founded as Littleton in honor of farmer and Confederate veteran James T. Littleton. The town was renamed at the suggestion of Littleton’s son to avoid confusion with other towns named Littleton when the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway took control of the local railroad. Geographically, Puryear is situated along the Tennessee Valley Divide, where rainwater flows either north toward the Tennessee River or west toward the Mississippi River.
