Beersheba Springs, Tennessee, is a historic town in Grundy County situated atop the Cumberland Plateau at an elevation of approximately 2,000 feet. Originally incorporated in 1839, the community gained prominence as the state’s first luxury mountain resort after Beersheba Porter Cain discovered a mineral-rich chalybeate spring there in 1833. In the mid-19th century, the area underwent significant development under Colonel John Armfield, who built a grand hotel and cottages to accommodate wealthy guests seeking a respite from the humid lowlands. Today, the town remains a peaceful retreat defined by its antebellum architecture and the Beersheba Springs Assembly, a United Methodist conference and retreat center that occupies the historic hotel. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Beersheba Springs serves as a gateway to the Savage Gulf State Park and is celebrated for its annual Arts and Crafts Festival and deep-rooted local history preserved at the Old Brown Museum.
