Baileyton, Tennessee, located in northern Greene County, is a historic town originally settled in 1776 and known as Laurel Gap. Renamed Baileyton in 1892 and incorporated in 1915, the town was named after brothers Claudius and Thomas P. Bailey. Historically a busy crossroads village, it was home to diverse trades ranging from smith shops to a shoe and boot factory, and established Oakland Seminary, the first institution of higher learning in northern Greene County, in 1883. Situated at the base of Bays Mountain near the Holston River valley, the community maintains its small-town character with a population of approximately 436 residents. Today, Baileyton is characterized by its proximity to the scenic Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians and its location as a gateway to local history and outdoor recreation.
