Scupper
A scupper is an essential architectural drainage element designed to provide an outlet for water to flow off a flat or low-slope roof, typically through a parapet wall or gravel stop. By creating a strategic opening in the building's exterior envelope, it prevents the accumulation of standing water, which can lead to leaks, structural damage, or even roof collapse. Scuppers can function as primary drainage or as overflow backups, often directing water into conductor heads, gutters, or downspouts to guide it safely away from the building's foundation. While primarily functional, they can also be decorative features, such as the elaborate gargoyles of Gothic architecture or simpler "lamb's tongue" projections, and are commonly fabricated from durable materials like copper, stainless steel, or masonry.
